Winter Larder

An adorable Red squirrel tucks in to a nut that he buried for his winter larder, months before. Perched on a snowy hollowed out tree trunk, he poses beautifully for wildlife cameraman and ecologist Danny Strong. A little seasonal magic has been added with the pretty snow flake border.The shot was taken by Danny in the Scottish Highlands, which is the last major stronghold in the British Isles for these beautiful charismatic little creatures. For years their future has been at risk due to the introduction of the larger Grey squirrel, that out competes them for food, while spreading squirrel pox, which can be deadly to these delilcate little reds.This is a still from our award winning rewilding documentary The Bough Breaks, which highlights the loss of habitat for so many iconic creatures like these, native to Scotland.
